I wondered if the design fade? whether it will fade quickly?

Is there anyway to preserve the design?

Can I use putty or leather protection on the damage within the design?

Leather always melted into a certain extent. It will to some extent depend on how it is done and how the pigments are stable have been used. You could give it a coat of clear finish that will stimulate what is already there.

If you do nothing else you should use a good water based leather to prevent wear on arrival by dirt and body oils (especially the hands)
